Born from the master’s dissertation defended by the author in 2014 in the Graduate Program in Philosophy at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Eduardo Soares Neves Silva, this book aims to offer an interpretation of Theodor W. Adorno’s philosophy that problematizes the status of the new in art. The relevance of this topic lies in the philosopher’s claim that the pursuit of novelty in modern art takes the fetishism of the commodity as its model. The book thus seeks to distinguish between the appearance of novelty in the culture industry and the genuinely new in art, highlighting how the latter ensures art’s truth content.

Furthermore, it argues that the new in modern art, rather than a mere modernist ideology, derives from Adorno’s interpretation of the dialectical tradition and the Romantic conception of the original work of art.

The book includes an original introduction by the author and a preface written by UFMG professor Eduardo Soares Neves Silva.
